This 2010 15" MacBook Pro was running sluggishly and constantly asking for and rejecting the admin password. Turned out it was booting in "safe mode", thanks to one of the keyboard's shift keys being stuck and continually sending an 'on' message.

The case of the exploding battery… this was an interesting one. MacBook Pro Mid 2015 model presented with a warped case which wouldn't close and a cracked trackpad. The battery had become so swollen it was literally bursting out of the machine.
